We've Got This
Many days I feel like an outsider when I am around most people. I know that the people who know me will say that that statement is not true, but I hide it well. As most people with a depression and or anxiety disorder often do, we become good at perceiving that everything is fine, when it could not be. When I was in high school, I lived near a concert venue that would bring in all of my favorite bands, I even bought a ticket one time and my friend and I drove the 45 minutes to get there and I saw the line and I immediately started to panic to myself. I simply could not do it, I could not go into the concert venue because of the crowd. I looked at my friend and informed him that I couldn't go in, that I didn't want to see the show. He did not know why I said what I said, but I do believe that he understood. Many of you would read this and think, "why would you buy a ticket then?" Well the answer to that is simple, you have to start somewhere. You have to take a step in the right direction to overcome that anxiety and or depression. The place where you are right now may not be where you want to be, but it is up to you to take a step to make progress in your journey. Even if it is a small step to accomplishing a task, take it. We cannot let our fears and being down get in the way of living a productive and joyful life. One must look at themselves to realize that they are not alone. Many people feel the way that you do, many people have the same fears that you do. Many people are fighting the same fight that you are fighting right now! Yes there will be set backs, such as getting to the concert and then turning around. But eventually I was able to overcome that fear and I have seen several concerts since. I no longer fear going to those types of events, matter of fact I have been to an amphitheater packed full of people and had an amazing time. My wife and I frequent a local church that we have been going to for quite some time now and as I have said before I do not want to push a religion on you- but I am going to use this as an example because I feel it would bring some light into what we are discussing. During the worship- we are told to not let your fears get the best of you and to worship how you want. If that is raising you hand or jumping up and down, that is who you are and embrace it. The same goes for a lot of circumstances in life, yes we may be in a crowd of individuals but there is something that separates us from everyone and that is you are unique. You are who you are and embrace it! Be you, don't be afraid to be afraid, it is OK to be afraid, but if the fear gets in the way of you living and enjoying life then you may want to work on taking some small steps to overcoming that fear that is standing in you way. I often think of fear as an emotion that is meant to be overcome.
For today, be brave. Stand up to the fear you face, take a small step towards your bright future. Don't be afraid to be afraid, it is OK to be afraid, but when that fear holds you back from living your life, you have to stare at that fear in the face and tell it to move. You are given a small window here on Earth that you can make the best of, many many people would love to have more time with their families and friends- so why should be let fear and anxiety stand in our way? Take a step and realize that you can do this, that you can overcome that fear obstacle that you are facing. It is not easy but just remember one thing...
